Scope and Contents

Contains records of the Chi Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Phi at the University of Maine. The record group includes constitution and bylaws, handbooks, membership information, secretary's notebooks, 1974-1977, and files of officers in the 1970s and 1980s. Also includes Book of Annals, an unpublished history of the Chi Chapter, with biographical information and photographs of charter members, especially Arthur L. Deering, as well as of elected members from 1930 through the 1950s.

Historical Note

Epsilon Sigma Phi is a national extension fraternity that seeks to foster standards of excellence in the extension system and to develop the extension profession. Chi Chapter, founded in Orono, Maine, on February 2, 1928, was the Maine chapter of the national organization. The founding seven members of the Chi Chapter were Leon S. Merrill, Arthur L. Deering, Clarence Day, Maurice D. Jones, Albert K. Gardner, Charles E. Crossland, and Norman L. Donahue.

As of 2000, Maine no longer had a local chapter of Epsilon Sigma Phi.

Abstract

Contains records of the Chi Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Phi at the University of Maine. The record group includes biographical information and photographs of charter members, especially Arthur L. Deering, as well as of elected members from 1930 through the 1950s.

Arrangement

The material is physically arranged by subject. Some file names were changed to make them more meaningful and to correct errors. Dates were also also added where missing.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Gift of University of Maine Cooperative Extension in 2008.

Accruals

Accruals from Epsilon Sigma Phi, Chi Chapter are not anticipated because the Chapter no longer operates.

The records were originally processed in 2012, but were reviewed again in May 2019 by Matthew Revitt, Raymond H. Fogler Library Special Collections Department who created a revised finding aid that included corrected dates and additional notes.
