Scope and Contents
The record group contains items documenting Charles Colesworthy’s years as a student at the Maine State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (now the University of Maine) in 1871-1875. It also contains class books for attendance, rank, and memorabilia from his time as a student at Portland High School.
Included in the record group are Colesworthy’s term reports, receipts for his tuition and other expenses, and notes, essays and mechanical drawings from his various classes. The record group also contains a ledger of minutes, 1871-1872, for the Eaglet Literary Fraternity, formed in 1871 with the object of “general improvement with special attention to debating and extemporaneous speaking.” Charles Colesworthy was one of the founding members. The constitution and bylaws of the Coburn Cadets, a military company of students, is also included.
The record group also contains a box of objects belonging to Colesworthy including his drafting instruments, brass buttons and epaulets, drumsticks, and pocket knife.

Biographical Note
Charles Franklin Colesworthy was born in 1852 in Falmouth Foreside, Maine and attended high school in Portland, Maine. He was a member of the class of 1875 at the Maine State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (now the University of Maine), graduating with a degree in civil engineering. While at the college he was a member of the Q.T.V. fraternity, the Eaglet Literary Fraternity and the Coburn Cadets. After graduation he went first to Carson City, Nevada and in 1881 to Pendleton, Oregon, where he lived until 1920. In Pendleton he was in the feed and livery business. He later lived in Hollywood and Los Angeles.
Colesworthy was married in 1893 to Margaret S. Beacham and they had two children: Joseph Bicknell Colesworthy and Edith Margaret Colesworthy. Charles Colesworthy died in 1933.
