The first meeting of the University of Maine Der Deutsche Verein (German Club) was held on October 29, 1902 at the home of Dr. Orlando Faulkland Lewis, Professor of Modern Languages. The minutes describe the administration of the Club and of various lectures given at meetings.

The material was gifted to the Library by Dr. John F. Klein, Professor of German.

The modern day objective of the University of Maine Der Deutsche Verein (German Club) is to promote cultural awareness (more specifically awareness of German-speaking countries) and to foster language development and understanding of cultures through interaction with fellow students of the German language, with native speakers and the public.
