Scope and Contents

Photographs taken by Edwin Melcher Smith during his time as a student at the University of Maine. Includes photographs of various seasonal campus scenes on the University of Maine's Orono campus, Oak Hall, students on campus and at camps, members of the Delta Rho fraternity, Field Day, Football Team (1898), Wingate Hall, soldiers, military drills and camps on campus and in Bath, Maine, Machine Shop and Engine Room, Track Team (1898), camp on Holbrook Pond, camp in Presque Isle (1895), Wingate Hall, Fernald Hall, engine and dynamo room, forge room, "ladies dormitory", Coburn Hall, "scrap" between the University of Maine Class of 1899 and Class of 1900, and baseball game (1895).

Biographical / Historical

Edwin Melcher Smith was a member of the University of Maine Class of 1899. While a student Smith was a member of the Delta Rho fraternity, played in the class baseball team, was a 1st sergeant and Drum-Major, Class Vice President and a member of the Class Executive Committee. Before attending the University of Maine Smith attended Gardner High School in Gardner, Maine.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Transferred to the Library Annex from the office of former head of special collections Richard Hollinger in 2021. The album had a cover letter from Edwin Melcher Smith's son Darrell O. Smith who donated the item to the Office of the President in 1996. The Office of the President subsequently transferred the item to Muriel Sanford, Head of Special Collections in 1996.
