The record series Annual Reports contains annual reports for the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and both the College of Arts and Humanities and College of Sciences which merged to form the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. Also, includes copies of individual College departmental annual reports and supporting material.
The record series Proposed Visual Arts Complex Records contains reports from the consultancy company C.W. Shaver & Company, Inc. regarding the 1998 proposed development of a Visual Arts Complex on the Orono campus to house the Department of Art and University of Maine Museum of Art.
The record series Accreditation Records contains self-studies, external reviews, program reviews, accreditation reports, and supporting information for the College, individual College departments, and the University of Maine in support of accreditation.
The record series University Restructure & Strategic Planning Records contains items from the 1996 University Of Maine Academic Affairs Planning Process which resulted in the formation of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. Also, copies of College department strategic plans, Advisory Board meeting material, details of a proposed downsizing of departments in 1993, and information on the University colleges from a 2007 Deans Council meeting.
The record series College Fund Raising Records contains meeting material for the College's Prospect Management Committee and lists of prospective donors.
The record series Department Program Records contains brochures for the Maine Mathematics and Science Teaching Excellence Collaborative and fliers for High School Outreach Programs sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences, whereby College faculty visited high schools. Also, includes details of a 1979 Conference on the Physically Handicapped in the Sciences and copies of: a 1975 grant proposal for the New England Open Learning Project, State of Maine Multicultural Resources Guide, Intensive English Institute brochure & application (1996-1997), and academic program fact sheets (2003-2006).
The record series Academic Council Records contains course/course modification/elimination proposals (issued by Undergraduate Curriculum Committee) submitted by academic units to the University of Maine's Academic Council for approval. Also, includes Academic Council meeting material, correspondence, policies and procedures, and Academic Council membership information.
The record series Event Records contains a copy of a program from the 2023 Maine Heritage Lecture given by Susan Pinette on "50 Years of Advocacy in Maine: Exploring the History of Franco American Activism".

Biographical / Historical
The University of Maine's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences was established in 1996 as part of University of Maine restructuring, with Rebecca E. Eilers as its first dean. The College merged departments from the Colleges of Arts and Humanities and College of Sciences. The College of Arts and Humanities had become into being as an separate entity from the former College of Arts and Sciences on July 1, 1989 under the leadership of acting dean Edward B. Laverty. The records detail college and university-wide restructures and downsizing of departments over time, particularly those in 1993 and the Academic Affairs Planning Process that resulted in the establishment of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
The following individuals have served as dean of the College: Rebecca E. Eilers (1996-2002), Gordon E. Kulberg (interim dean 2002-2003), Ann Leffler (2003-2007), Jeffrey Hecker (2007-2013), and Emily Haddad (2014-present).

Physically the material is arranged by subject. File names and dates were added. Material was rehoused into archival quality storage.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
Boxes 1-7 and Box 8 Folders 1-3 were transferred to Special Collection on February 24, 2021 by Kelly Gilks, Administrative Specialist, Office of the Dean College of Liberal Arts & Sciences as Accession #2021-0224.
Box 8 Folders 4-53 and Box 9 were transferred to Special Collections on June 9, 2021 by Dr. Timothy M. Cole, Associate Dean for Academics, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Associate Professor of Political Science as Accession #2021-0609a.
Box 9, Folders 71 & 72 were transferred to Special Collections on February 24, 2023 by Kelly Gilks, Dean's Office, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences as Accession #2023-0224.
Box 9, Folder 72 was added to Special Collections by University Archivist Matthew Revitt in October, 2023. The flier was transferred to Special Collections by Fogler Library Dean of Libraries Daisy Singh.
Appraisal
The processing archivist appraised the records and destroyed duplicate copies of items, reference material, and items related to the academic performance of individual students. The material was not appropriate for permanent retention in Fogler Library’s Special Collections.
Accruals
Accruals from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences are anticipated.
Processing Information
Processed by Matthew Revitt, October 2021, Raymond H. Fogler Library Special Collections Department. Processing involved a collection survey and the creation of this finding aid. The material was rehoused into appropriate archival folders and the boxes and folders numbered and titled added using information from ArchivesSpace.
