Biographical / Historical
The University of Maine Museum of Art was established in 1946 by faculty member and curator Vincent Hartgen. Originally the museum was called the University of Maine Art Collection and was under the Department of Art. In 1988, the museum was renamed the University of Maine Museum of Art and became its own entity. Before moving to its current downtown Bangor location, it was located in Carnegie Hall on the University of Maine campus in Orono. The permanent collection of the University of Maine Museum of Art include artist such as Pablo Picasso, Roy Lichenstien and Robert Rauschenberg.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
Folders 1-8 were transferred to Special Collections on May 29, 2019 by Kari Beaty, Special Collections Student Worker, who also worked at the Museum.
Folders 9-11 were added in August 2022, from material curated by former special collections archivist Muriel Sanford.
Accruals from the Museum of Art are anticipated.

Processed in May 2019 by Matthew Revitt and student worker Kari Beaty, Raymond H. Fogler Library Special Collections Department. Processing involved a collection survey and the creation of this finding aid. The material was rehoused into appropriate archival folders and the boxes and folders numbered and titled using information from ArchivesSpace.
