Scope and Contents

The records mainly contain textual information curated by Professor Musgrave on her career, but there are also photographs and a CD ROM containing photographs of her 90th birthday celebration.

The records include various versions of Professor Musgrave's curriculum vitae, clippings and correspondence regarding Musgrave's achievements, certificates, photographs including Musgrave with U.S. Senator Susan Collins, items from events celebrating Musgrave's life and career, and copies of articles, papers, and publications authored by Professor Musgrave.

Biographical / Historical

Professor Katherine Ogilvie Musgrave was born February 8, 1920, in Allisona, TN. Having graduated with a B.S. in Food Nutrition from Maryville College in 1941 Musgrave would go on to earn a M.S. in Nutrition from Oklahoma State University in 1968. The following year (1969) Professor Musgrave started at the University of Maine as an instructor and assistant professor in Food and Nutrition before in 1979 earning a professorship. Professor Musgrave was an advocate of wise food selection and the promotion of wellness and throughout her career at the University she wrote numerous papers and articles on the subject as well as nutrition guides.

In 1986, Musgrave retired from the University of Maine, but she would remain active in the field of nutrition and at UMaine as professor emerita, continuing to teaching FSN 101 Introduction to Food and Nutrition many years after retirement. Throughout her career Professor Musgrave received numerous awards including: Outstanding Women of Northern and Eastern Maine (1983), American Home Economic Association Leader Award (1989), Award for Excellence in Community Dietetics (1991), Maryann Hartman (1995), and Outstanding Continuing Education Faculty member in the New England Region (2002). In 2011, Professor Musgrave was elected into the Maine Women’s Hall of Fame and received the Medallion Award from the American Dietetic Association.

Professor Katherine Ogilvie Musgrave died on June 20, 2015 at the age of 95.

The material is physically arranged by subject. Material was separated and divided into multiple sub-folders where necessary. Material were rehoused into archival quality storage.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The material was transferred to the Library Storage Annex from the office of Head of Special Collections Richard Hollinger in February 2018. The material had been donated to Special Collections by Katherine Musgrave, but date of donation is unclear.


There is believed to be a digital donation of material (unaccessioned) that will be added to this record group.

Related Materials

There are records on some of Professor Musgrave's research projects in the record group Office of Research and Sponsored Programs Records, SpC MS 0584. There are also copies of nutrition guides authored by Musgrave in Special Collections.
