Scope and Contents Note
The records mainly contain textual information created and curated by Earl Beard during his tenure as a professor in mathematics at the University of Maine. There is also a computer disc possibly related to the business building plans.
The record series University Administrative Records contains material regarding University of Maine accreditation, plans for the business building, material from various University wide and Department of Mathematics committees Beard was a member of, and information regarding the memorial service for Howard Neville & the dedication of Neville Hall.
The record series Teaching & Biographical Records contains conference material, a course proposal, supporting material related to Bear’s promotion attempt, and information regarding the State of Maine Task Force on Education.
The record series Associated Faculties of the University of Maine Records contains union agreements, committee meeting material and correspondence regarding labor relations.
The record series Faculty Lounge Records contains correspondence, promotional material, and financial information regarding the University of Maine’s Faculty Lounge, including its renovation.

Biographical Note
Earl M. Beard was born in June 1937 in Washington, D.C. In 1963 he earned his MA at Bowdoin College and in 1968 his PhD at the University of Wisconsin. He was a professor of mathematics at the University of Maine. During his tenure at the University of Maine Beard was also chair of the Department of Mathematics, on numerous University committees, and the president of the Associated Faculties of the University of Maine. Beard was also involved in the administration of the Faculty Lounge.

Abstract
The papers include University of Maine faculty committee records. Included are papers on accreditation, union agreements, labor relations, membership lists, minutes of meetings, building plans, faculty lounge in Hannibal Hamlin Hall, and papers of the Policy Advisory Committee.
Arrangement
The Records Group is broken down intellectually into the following record series: 1. University Administrative Records, 2. Teaching & Biographical Records, 3. Associated Faculties of the University Of Maine Records and 4. Faculty Lounge Records.
Physically the material is arranged by subject. File names and dates were added. Material was rehoused into archival quality storage.
Box numbers have changed:
- Old Box #772 (New Box #1 & 2)
- Old Box #773 & 774 (New Box #2)
Appraisal
Records considered to not be of archival value were disposed of by the processing archivist including reference material. The processing archivist also disposed of material inline with University of Maine Retention Practices, including student evaluations, staff grievance files, invoices, and phone bills.

Processing Information
Processed by Matthew Revitt, November, 2019, Raymond H. Fogler Library Special Collections Department. Processing involved a collection survey and intellectual arrangement into series and the creation of this finding aid. Material was rehoused into appropriate archival folders and the boxes and folders numbered and titled using information from ArchivesSpace. The disposal of material deemed not of archival value meant the contents of the 3 original boxes could be merged and consolidated into 2 boxes.
