Biographical / Historical
The Department of Public Administration mission was to prepare students for careers in public and nonprofit administration-particularly in state and local government, to promote an understanding and appreciation of the functions and value of government in society, and to contribute to the improvement of governance and societal institutions. The Department housed the Master of Public Administration and the Bachelor of Science in Public Management programs. Both programs were suspended by the Chancellor of the University of Maine System in 2011. The suspensions were based on recommendations by the Academic Program Prioritization Working Group (APPWG) and a decision by the President of the University of Maine. The Department of Public Administration began to be phased out in 2012 and was officially eliminated in June 2014. The last student that graduated from that program did so in May 2014.
The University of Maine at Augusta has a Department of Public Administration which offers Bachelor of Science, Post-Baccalaureate & Associate of Science degrees to prepare students for administrative careers in government and not-for-profit organizations.
