Scope and Contents

Materials include budgets, plant lists, landscape drawings, and color photographs of landscape design projects by James E. Swasey, University of Maine Landscape Designer and Professor of Ornamental Horticulture. Projects include the Park Street entrance sign, English - Math Computer Complex, Harold Alfond Sports Arena, York Village Apartments, Memorial Gymnasium, Wallace Pool and Wrestling Arena, United States Department of Agriculture New England Plant, Soil and Water Laboratory, Honors Center, Nutting Hall, Jenness Hall, Aroostook Farm in Presque Isle, and the east entrance to Raymond H. Fogler Library. Items also include a short history of the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences published in an Agricultural Experiment Station newsletter, a few postcard images of campus from the 1970s, a photograph of an early Olmsted Brothers landscape design for campus, and a photograph of an early sketch of campus buildings.

Biographical Note

Dr. James E. Swasey was a member of the Plant and Soil Sciences Department faculty at the University of Maine in Orono from 1971 to 1984, serving as chair of the deparment for several years. He was also the landscape designer for the Orono campus, an assignment which involved planning and care of woody plants growing on the 100-acre campus and approximately 50 herbacious garden areas. He attended Cornish High School in Cornish, Maine, the University of New Hampshire, and completed graduate study at the University of Maryland.
