Biographical / Historical

In September 1975, the Board of Trustees of the University of Maine approved the creation of a School of Performing Arts in the College of Arts and Sciences. The purpose for such a school was to amalgamate the various performing arts units on the Orono campus into one administrative body within the College of Arts and Sciences. Existing units at that time included music, theater, and broadcasting/film. Since its approval, the School has incorporated dance as an integral part. Murray North was appointed the first director of the School of Performing Arts in 1977.

The School continues to offer degrees in music, theatre, and dance and organizes various events on campus in the Minsky Recital Hall, Hauck Auditorium, and Collins Center; in the community; and beyond. The School also has a number of musical ensembles including the University of Maine Singers, Collegiate Choir, Oratorio Society, Black Bear Men's Chorus, Symphonic Band, University Orchestra, and Concert Band.

The School is housed in the Class of 1944 Hall which opened in the fall of 1996.

Arrangement

Physically the records are arranged by subject and secondary by season having originally being arranged by calendar year. Some file names were changed to make them more meaningful and to correct errors. Removing duplicate copies of programs and schedules allowed material to be consolidated into fewer folders. Material was rehoused into archival quality storage.
