The record series NASA Project Records contains copies of a grant applications submitted by the University of Maine to the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration to support the training of graduate students in space related sciences and technology in 1962 and supplemental applications submitted in 1963, 1964, and 1966. Also, includes applications for pre-doctoral training grants which were rejected by NASA. Also, includes correspondence regarding the grants, budget information, and reports.
The record series Graduate School Appointments includes various forms outlining the qualification of proposed participants in graduate instruction at the University of Maine’s Graduate School. Also, includes copies of applicant’s curriculum vitae.

Biographical / Historical
Franklin Paul Eggert was born in 1920 in Buffalo, N.Y. He received his B.S. degree and his doctorate from Cornell University. He came to the University of Maine in 1949 as extension fruit specialist and head of the horticulture department of the Agricultural Experiment Station. He was dean of the Graduate School from 1963 to 1975, served from 1963 to 1967 as director of research, and served as chairperson of the Plant and Soil Science Department and as professor of horticulture. He retired from the University in 1986.
Franklin Paul Eggert died age 83 on October 23, 2003.

The Records Group is broken down intellectually into the following record series: 1. Graduate School Correspondence, 2. Correspondence, 3. NASA Project Records, and 4. Graduate School Appointment Applications.
Physically the boxes are primarily arranged by subject. The record series Graduate School Correspondence and Correspondence are secondary arranged by year and then further arranged by subject of correspondence in alphabetical order. The record series NASA Project Records are secondary arranged by year in chronological order. The record series Graduate School Appointment Applications are secondary arranged by last name of applicant in alphabetical order.
Some file names and dates were changed to make them more meaningful and to correct errors. Material was rehoused into archival quality storage.

Accruals
Accruals from Professor Eggert are not anticipated because he died in 2003.

Processing Information
Processed by Matthew Revitt, September 2018, Raymond H. Fogler Library Special Collections Department. Processing involved a collection survey and intellectual arrangement into series and the creation of this finding aid. Material was rehoused into appropriate archival folders and the boxes and folders numbered and titled using information from ArchivesSpace.
