Scope and Contents

The collection contains business records of the Martinon Lumber Company from 1916 to 1926. The first series, executive records, is the largest in the collection and is made up primarily of incoming and outgoing correspondence. Many letters are between the Bangor and New Brunswick offices and are to or from Irving G. Stetson, Frank Hinckley, or Waldo Lowell. Other frequent correspondents include William G. Barker Co., lumber commission merchants in Boston; Walstein R. Chester & Co., wholesale lumber dealers in Boston; Morse & Buffum Co., wholesale lumber dealers in Providence, R.I.; and Chaffee Brothers Co., lumber dealers in Oxford, Mass. The second series, financial records, contains mainly statements and invoices for materials sold by Martinon, as well as a few records of inventories and expense account statements of Waldo Lowell. The purchasing records series includes various invoices to Martinon, 1918-1925, for goods and materials it purchased. The last series, sales records, contains information about lumber orders filled by Martinon. Paperwork with each order number includes a schedule of lumber shipped, outlining board feet in the order; a copy of the order; charges; a bill of lading; and a freight bill.
