Scope and Contents

The collection records the editorial opinions in major newspapers during the Italo-Ethiopian War of 1935-1936. Includes foreign affairs editorials, mostly concerning Pierre Laval and Sir Samuel Hoare and the Abyssinia question, 1935-1936. Includes typescripts and newspaper clippings.

Biographical Note

David White Trafford was born in Blaine, Maine, in 1916 and died in Florida in 1993. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1939 with an A.B. Degree, Summa Cum Laude, in history. He received both his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in history from Indiana University in 1940 and 1947. He joined the University of Maine faculty teaching history and was appointed chair of the University of Maine Study Abroad Program in 1965. He retired in 1979. He was affiliated with the Institute of American Studies Abroad, serving as an honorary fellow of the Institute, vice president for admissions and, during the early 1980's, as director of the Institute-Affiliated British Studies Centre in Kent, England.
