Biographical Note

Roscoe C. Emery, son of Oliver and Josephine Emery, was a politician, newspaper editor, and real estate and insurance agent in Eastport, Maine. He was the owner and editor of the Eastport Sentinel from 1914-1946 and owner of the Sentinal Real Estate Agency. He served in the Maine State Senate from 1920 to 1924 and was Mayor of Eastport from 1928 to 1932 and 1934 to 1936. He was an active promoter of the Passamaquoddy Tidal Power Development Project and founded the Washington County Chamber of Commerce. He and his wife Vera Leonard Emery had two children: Walter L. Emery and Joyce Emery Kinney, an Eastport historian and author. Roscoe Emery died on December 14, 1969.

Organization and Arrangement

The collection is divided into three series: I. Personal papers, II. Business records and III. Oversized photographs.

Series I is further divided into seven sub-series: 1. General civic correspondence; 2. Civic subject files; 3. Knights of Pythias; 4. Passamaquoddy Tidal Power Development Project; 5. Political papers; 6. Records of Washington County Chamber of Commerce; and 7. Family papers.

Series II includes records of the Eastport Sentinel and records of the Sentinel Agency.

Series III includes oversized photographs from the previous two series.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Gift of Joyce Emery Kinney in November 1963 and August 1989.
