Historical Note
Leon Leonwood Bean started the company in 1912 as a one-man direct mail order business. Today it is a privately held, family-owned company with retail stores, factory outlet stores, and a worldwide catalog business. The flagship store in Freeport, Maine, is open 24 hours a day. The company sells outdoor gear and apparel as well as items for the home and outdoor living.
