Biographical / Historical

Dr. William H. Allen is listed as a physician in the Maine Register of 1855 and 1857, and not in the Maine Register of 1870. It appears that Dr. Allen began his practice in 1836. Doctor James H. Thompson apparently joined with Doctor Allen in 1859. In July of 1861, the partnership was dissolved when Dr. Thompson joined the 12th Maine Volunteers as a surgeon. He was mustered in on Nov. 15, 1861. In December of 1863 he was ordered to the Surgeon General, resigned, and was honorably discharged Nov. 4, 1863. The Regiment served in New Orlean and Baton Rouge and was at Port Hudson. There is no further record of Thompson after 1863.
