Biographical Note
Herbert Tracy was born in Winter Harbor in 1853, the son of Leonard B. Tracy and Martha C. Stover Tracy. Tracy had been a master of ocean-going vessels before establishing his boat business, first in Bar Harbor and then in Winter Harbor. There he owned a fleet of small boats, including a gasoline-powered launch, which he made available to summer residents of the area. His letterhead lists his business as "steam and sail yachts, sail or rowboats and canoes to let, yachts of all sizes housed in winter, licensed pilots furnished, yachts put in commission, wharf and boat builder, and house painting." During World War I, answering a call for men with seagoing experience, he was put in charge of a schooner patrolling the Frenchman Bay area. At the age of 63, he thus became the oldest person in Maine to enter military service. After a year he was assigned as a construction officer at Bar Harbor and then was assigned to a radio station on Mount Desert Island where he served until he was discharged in 1920. He then returned to his business in Winter Harbor. He died in 1923.
