Historical Note

Maurice L. and Carrie Gray were the proprietors of the Baycrest Hotel in Harborside, Cape Rosier, Maine. The hotel was open year-round but did most of its business during the summer months. It appears to have been in business from 1912 until 1967. According to tax documents found in the collection, the hotel was located on about eight acres of land. By 1940 several buildings made up the site, including the main house, originally a farmhouse built about 1874 and remodeled through the years, a dining room and kitchen building, four bungalows, an amusement hall, a barn, a library and storage building, several garages, a laundry and an ice house. Also included were a wharf and landing float as well as four rowboats. A net profit of $861 was listed in 1940.
