Historical Note

Joseph Godfrey Deering (1816-1892) built a sawmill in 1866 in Biddeford, Maine. In 1869 he purchased land that in the 1890s became the office for the lumber company J.G. Deering & Son. The company was incorporated in 1903. Joseph Deering's son, Frank C. Deering and Frank Deering's son, Joseph G. Deering also joined the business. The company operated sawmills and dealt in finished lumber and other building materials until its sale to Thomas M. Armstrong in 1958. The name was then changed to Deering Lumber, Inc.
