Historical Note

The Island Reading Club in Orono, Maine began around 1884. Its purpose was to "quicken an interest in the best literature we can select and to improve ourselves in our reading by every means attainable. We agree to criticise each other kindly, both as to pronunciation, and also the best rendering of the articles read." The Club met weekly in the homes of the members starting in the first week in October and ending the last week in March. The first president in 1884 was Mrs. Ellen Libby.
