The preamble of its constitution states its purpose as "improving ourselves in the art of extemporaneous speaking, of acquiring a general knowledge of declamation, and of rendering mutual assistance to each other in the acquirement of an education, also of cultivating social intercourse and of cherishing brotherly love."
