Biographical Note

Nathaniel Rounds, a skilled blacksmith, was born in 1799 and died in 1868. In 1816 he moved from Buxton, Maine to Waterford, and in 1822 he married Betsey Brown who was born in 1803. Among their children were Jane born in 1822, Edwin born in 1827, Charles Collins born in 1831, Harriet born in 1835, and Cristina born in 1842. Jane married Calvin Follet and went to New Michigan, Illinois to live. Harriet Rounds never married and died young. Cristina ("Kriss") went to Brooklyn and was the principal of a very successful girls' school.

Biographical Note

Charles Collins Rounds went to Dartmouth College for two years and then taught school. As a teacher he boarded at the house of William Stowell in South Paris and fell in love with their daughter Kate. The Stowell family had owned all the land on which the town of South Paris was built. Kate taught school for a while and then she and Charles were married. He became principal of the State Normal School at Farmington, Maine. They had four children: Iola, Arthur, Ralph, and Katie. Arthur and Ralph became New York lawyers.

Biographical Note

Betsey Brown Rounds had a brother William who was a chaplain during the Civil War.
