Scope and Contents

The collection includes correspondence, notes, deeds, land records, mortgages of the Old Town, Maine area, and Penobscot River Navigation Company certificates. Folder 1 contains bills, receipts, and letters relating to Old Town from 1833-1878; a copy of the Eagle Literary Fraternity College Gazette, v. 1, no. 3, ca. 1869; a copy of a list of plants analyzed by class in the year 1869 by Heddle Hilliard; letters from G.E. Hammond (1871-1873), E.J. Haskell, and others; and 2 letters to Cornelia M. Hilliard, Old Town, Maine, 1927 and 1929 from George H. Sargent. Folder 2 contains 35 stock certificates of the Penobscot River Navigation Company; and legal documents and miscellaneous papers including pension papers from the United States Department of the Interior to John H. Modery, Alton Village, Maine. Folder 3 contains land records from Penobscot County in the 1830's. Folder 4 contains court records (non land) from mainly Penobscot County.

Biographical Note

Heddle Hilliard was born in Old Town, Maine in 1853, the son of John Heddle and Anna Maria Hilliard. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1872, a member of its first class to graduate there. He was a civil engineer and served Old Town as city engineer and was a member of the Board of Assessors. He had four sons, John Heddle, Edward K., Stanley T., and Sewall. He died in 1924.

Biographical Note

John Heddle Hilliard, father of Heddle Hilliard (b. 1853) and Cornelia M., was an attorney, a partner with his brother William T. in a law practice. He was county attorney and town clerk of Old Town, Maine, among other positions.

Biographical Note

John Heddle Hilliard was born in Springfield, Ohio in 1881, the son of Heddle and Susan (Elizabeth Knight) Hilliard. He spent his childhood days in Old Town and lived with his aunt, Cornelia Hilliard. He was a 1903 graduate of the University of Maine and a 1906 graduate of Harvard Law School. He was an attorney-at-law in New York City and was a patent lawyer. He died in New Brunswick in 1972.

Biographical Note

Cornelia M. Hilliard was the sister of Heddle Hilliard and served as librarian in Old Town, Maine for many years.
