Biographical Note
Henry E. Prentiss was born in 1809 in Paris, Maine. A graduate of West Point, he taught mathematics there before being commissioned and joining the Army in Alabama. He left the Army in 1834 and moved to Bangor, Maine where he studied law, later practicing there and in Orono, Maine. He also owned and managed many acres of timberland in Maine and Pennsylvania. Prentiss served in the Maine legislature, 1857-1859, and as mayor of Bangor, 1870-1871. He died on July 1, 1873.
