Biographical Note

Ruth Swett Mayhew was born in 1822 in Orland, Maine. She was a nurse with the Army of the Potomac from 1863-1865 and after the war served in Bath, Maine as matron at a home for orphans of soldiers of the Civil War. She died in Rockland, Maine in 1875.
