Scope and Contents
The collection centers around the purchase of candles from John G. Rathborne Ltd. by both the Harris Company and Norton Portland Corp. to give to their clients and business associates. It contains letters to Herman Cohen of Norton Portland written in 1956 and 1957 from many businesses nation-wide thanking him for the gift of Rathborne candles given to the firms at Christmas 1956. Letters to the Harris Company in 1962 were written to thank them for the gift of similar candles depicting Maine scenes; the letters are from chambers of commerce, state game commissions, governors' offices, etc. The collection also contains undated photographs of Rathborne displays at trade shows as well as pictures of their candles used at events of oil dealers in Holyoke and Natick, Mass., as well as in Hallowell, Portland, and Rockland, Maine.

Historical Note
The Harris Company, located in Portland, Maine, was incorporated in 1921. Managed by four brothers, the company dealt in marine, industrial and general hardware and equipment. The brothers also owned the Harris Oil Company, incorporated in Portland in 1938, and dealing in heating oil and heating equipment. Herman Cohen served as chairman of the board of the Norton Portland Corporation, also in Portland, Maine. Cohen was the inventor of the Wonsover machine, a large device used to work farm land, fertilize the ground and plant seeds all in a single operation. The John G. Rathborne company, established in Dublin, Ireland, in 1488, are manufacturers of candles.
