Scope and Contents Note

The collection includes bills and receipts from 1849-1871 of both Albert Shaw & Co. and Daniel Shaw & Co. Some are for operations on the Roach River in 1853-1854 and 1855-1857. The collection also contains incoming business correspondence to Milton G. Shaw from 1854-1857 and bills, etc. to the estate of Albert Shaw, 1868-1870.

Biographical Note : Albert Shaw

Albert Shaw, son of Daniel and Mehitable (Gilman) Shaw, was born in Industry, Maine, on Nov. 20, 1811. He engaged in farming on the family homestead, first with his brother Daniel, and afterward alone. By the purchase and improvement of adjoining land, he became the owner of one of the largest and best farms in Industry. In connection with his farming, he was interested in lumbering for many years and was also a dealer in neat stock and wool. He held the office of selectman and town treasurer in Industry and served in the State Legislature in 1860. He died of typhoid fever on Dec. 18, 1868.

Biographical Note : Daniel Shaw

Daniel Shaw, son of Daniel and Mehitable (Gilman) Shaw, was born in Industry, Maine, on March 30, 1813. When a young man he purchased the homestead in Industry in company with his brother Albert, and together they engaged in farming and lumbering. He resided in Maine until 1851, when he sold his property in Industry to his brother Albert and removed to Allegany Co., N.Y. In 1855 he moved to Eau Claire, Wis., where he made his home for the rest of his life. There he immediately erected a mill and engaged in lumbering. He continued in business with marked success, enlarging from time to time, until at length the firm of Daniel Shaw & Co. had gained a wide reputation for the magnitude of its operations. In 1875 the Daniel Shaw Lumber Co. was organized, and Mr. Shaw elected president and held that office up to the time of his death in October 1881.

Biographical Note : Milton Gilman Shaw

Milton Gilman Shaw, son of Daniel and Mehitable (Gilman) Shaw, was born in Industry, Maine, on Dec. 31, 1820. In 1841 he went into the woods and engaged in farming and lumbering at Greenville and at Flagstaff. He first worked for his brothers Albert and Daniel. In 1845 he located at Greenville, on the southern end of Moosehead Lake, which afterwards became the headquarters of his operations. His business was logging and selling logs, and he lived there forty years, engaging also in farming and commercial pursuits. In 1883 he went to Bath with his sons to build the Shaw lumber mill. The M.G. Shaw Lumber Company was incorporated in 1897. For more than 60 years he was a prominent figure on Moosehead Lake and the Kennebec River. He died on December 18, 1903.
