Bucknam Family Papers
Scope and Contents Note
Papers of residents of Columbia Falls, Maine, and records of a temperance society in Columbia Falls. Twenty-three pages of one of the notebooks are records of the Howard Association for the Promotion of Temperance in Columbia Falls for the years 1834 to 1840. Included are the constitution, list of subscribers, and minutes of meetings signed by the Secretary, Ichabod Bucknam. The remainder of the notebook and the second notebook were used as daybooks for farm records of expenses and money received. Among the papers removed from the notebooks is a Note and Security signed by Robert B. Langstaff of Howland, Maine, on December 5, 1910 for four hundred fifty dollars borrowed from C.E. Thomas. Included also is a note signed by C.E. Thomas for the receipt of the balance of the money owed by Langstaff paid by G.W. Bucknam on May 8, 1912.

Biographical Note : George Wilson Bucknam
George Wilson Bucknam, son of George Augustus and Julia Frances Bucknam, was born on Nov. 1, 1870 in Columbia Falls, Maine and died on March 26, 1945. He was an express business operator (Columbia Falls to Jonesport), a farmer, and a town official of Columbia Falls from 1900 to 1920. He married Eva Priscilla Allen on Dec. 17, 1902. She was born on May 2, 1874 in Columbia Falls and died on August 23, 1945.
Biographical Note : Ichabod Bucknam
Ichabod Bucknam, son of John and Mary Bucknam of Columbia Falls, Maine, was born on Jan. 25, 1784 and died Aug. 26, 1846. He was a sea captain, farmer, lumberman, town official, county sheriff, Maine legislator in 1822, and justice of the peace at Columbia Falls. He married Elizabeth Wilson at Columbia Falls on Feb. 28, 1816, and they had 9 children.
Historical Note : Howard Association for the Promotion of Temperance
The Howard Association for the Promotion of Temperance in Columbia Falls, Maine was an auxiliary of the Washington County Temperance Society. Ichabod Bucknam was the secretary of the Association from 1834 to 1840.
