The Independent Order of Good Templars was founded in Utica, New York in 1850 as the "Knights of Jericho," a secret fraternal temperance society. Its name was changed to the Independent Order of Good Templars in 1852. Valley Lodge No. 259 was located in Blanchard, Maine.
