Scope and Contents Note

Diaries and papers of a railroad employee living in Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts.The 29 diaries cover the years 1883, 1885-1891, 1895-1906, 1909-1915, 1917, and 1927. Entries include short observations on the weather, daily activities, trips made, family activities, visitors. Records of cash accounts are included at the end of each diary. Also included in the papers are bank account books from Merchants National Bank of Boston (1914 Nov. 20-1918 June 19); Forest City Trust Company, Portland, Maine (1922 Nov. 17-1923 May 28); First National Bank, Portland, Maine (1923 July 6-1926 July 12); and Melrose Trust Company, Melrose, Massachusetts (1927 March 8-June 27). Also included are two Memorandum Books: one for 1906 and one which lists teachers and their students and lists accounts for 1913 and 1914. Included also is a diary by Ernest's son Malcolm for the year 1913. Included are 4 letters from The Grand Trunk Railway Company of Canada in 1886, 1889 and 1892 concerning Ernest Boynton's salary. Removed from the backs of the diaries were many business cards, membership cards, newspaper clippings, and receipts.

Biographical Note

Ernest H. Boynton, son of Robert and Lucy Boynton, was born in 1864 and died in 1946. His father's estate was the largest in Oxford, Maine, in 1870. They lived in the part of Oxford known as Welchville. Ernest was a station agent for the Grand Trunk Railway and during the years he wrote his diaries he lived in Oxford, Yarmouthville, Auburn, and Lewiston, Maine; Berlin, New Hampshire; Boston and Melrose, Massachusetts. He married Cora Blanchard on October 2, 1889. His son Malcolm was born Nov. 13, 1894. They had four other children: Charles, Robert, Leah, and Beatrice.
