S. Adonirans Hayward was born around 1842 and lived in Easton, Massachusetts during the time he received the letters written by H. A. Poole. He was a maker of mathematical instruments.

H. A. Poole was a resident of Waterville, Maine and worked for a railroad. He was also a lumberman and apparently owned a small woodlot in Massachusetts. He was married in 1891.
