Carr for an economics class on the history of the wood hame industry in the United States; a typescript of a report on the history and description of Concord hames (11 leaves); a typescript of a history of the hame industry in New England (8 leaves); a price list (no date) of the Bartlett & Rowell hames manufactured by Bartlett & Rowell, proprietors of the Granite Hames Works, Sunapee, N.H. (15 p.); a catalog of wood and steel hames, hame trimmings and saddlery hardware for domestic use, no. 22, November, 1922, manufactured by U.S. Hame Company, Buffalo, N.Y.; a sawing book record of the Codman & Carr Company for the years 1838 to 1853; a chart showing the relationship of manufacturers of hames in the United States from 1825 to 1902;; legal papers of the United Hame Company of New York, the Consolidated Hame Company of Andover and Sunapee, New Hampshire, and the U.S. Hame Company; a list of stockholders from Aug. 31, 1920 (company not named); and deeds or bills of sale from the United Hame Company and the Consolidated Hame Company of 1902.

Historical Note

Hames are one of the two curved wooden or metal projections which are attached to or form part of the collar of a draft horse and to which the traces are fastened. The Consolidated Hame Company was formed around 1896 when the Baker, Carr & Company merged with Bartlett & Rowell. The Consolidated Hame Company purchased the Rome Hame Company and in 1902 were merged with various concerns which became known as the U.S. Hame Company.
