Scope and Contents Note

A collection of photographs, postcards, and clippings about steamboats sailing in Penobscot Bay, Maine. Included are picture postcards of the Steamer J.T. Morse, the Steamer Norumbega, and the Steamer Pemaquid; 2 photographs of Wilbur A. Morse, shipbuilder in Friendship, Maine; newspaper clippings of advertisements by steamship companies and of stories of steamship accidents; and receipts for freight carried by the Steamer Merryconeag, the Steamer Cambridge, the Steamer Blue Hill, and by the Portland, Mt. Desert & Machias Steamboat Co.

Biographical Note

Wilbur A. Morse was born around 1853 and was a shipbuilder in Friendship, Maine. He is credited with developing the Friendship Sloop and the design quickly gained renown for its ease of handling and exceptional seaworthiness.
