Smith and Clark Families Collection
Scope and Contents Note
A collection of items found in an old house in Augusta, Maine. Some of the items are related to the Smith family and some to the Clark family. Included is correspondence to Anson S. Clark from Annie, to sister Annie from George Simpson, to brother from R.S. Clark, to Annie from Nancie J. Purington, and to Anson from Ann Olivia. Included also are receipts to William Clark (1821) and to A.S. Clark (1889), a deed to Rowland Smith (1797), a tax receipt to William Smith from the town of Augusta (1841), a certificate from the town clerk of Augusta that Samuel Babcock and Mercy Bickford were married on January 19, 1826, and a notice from Nancy Smith to Mary Clark ordering her to vacate her house (1843)

Biographical Note
Rowland Smith was born in 1761 in Middleborough, Massachusetts and died in 1840. In 1793 he married Nancy Clark in Augusta. They had a daughter Ann who was born around 1799, married William Clark, and died in 1856. Nancy Clark Smith died in 1864.
Anson S. Clark married Annie M. Simpson in 1865 in Augusta, Maine. She had a brother George F. Simpson. She died in 1884 at the age of 38 years.
Rowland S. Clark served in the Civil War and died in Augusta, Maine in 1863.
