David Stewart Diaries and Temperance Society Records
Scope and Content Note
The diaries of a farmer and Baptist minister from 1880 to 1884. Included in one of the diaries are records of the United Sisters Union of the Daughters of Temperance in Corinna, Maine. The records list the name of members, date of initiation into the union, and the payment of weekly dues for the years 1848 to 1850.

Biographical Note
David Stewart was a resident of Corinna, Maine who was born around 1797. He and Elizabeth Merreck were married in 1822 and settled in Corinna that year. In 1827 David Stewart, an ardent Prohibitionist, delivered the first temperance lecture ever heard in Corinna and followed it up by years of earnest work for the promotion of temperance in the community. He was a Baptist minister and farmer. He and his wife were also teachers. They had 4 children: Elizabeth who married John Winchester, Levi Merreck who became a multi-millionaire in Minneapolis, Charles Miller, and David Dinsmore who became a millionaire through real estate business and investments.
