Biographical Note

Hall and Marmion families of Harpers Ferry, Va. (later W. Va.). John Hancock Hall (d. 1841) was the inventor of the breechloading rifle and a native of Maine who moved to Harpers Ferry to establish a rifle works at the U.S. Armory there. Around 1840 his daughter Lydia Preble Hall married Dr. Nicholas Marmion (1798?-1882), an Irish immigrant and graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. They had 3 children: William V., Robert A., and Annie P. Peter Thacher, Mary Thacher, and Geo. W. Thacher were cousins of Lydia, and Mary was her sister.
