Historical Note
The Lakeside Women's Christian Temperance Union of South China [Maine] was an auxiliary to the Woman's Christian Temperance Union of the State of Maine and the national W.C.T.U. The national Woman's Christian Temperance Union was organized in 1874 in Cleveland, Ohio, by women who were concerned about the problems alcohol was causing their families and society. The members chose total abstinence from all alcohol as their life style and protection of the home as their watchword. Local chapters were called "Unions" and were largely autonomous, but closely linked to the state unions and national headquarters. There were clear channels of authority and communication, and the W.C.T.U. quickly became the largest woman's organization in the United States.
