Biographical Note

Cyrus Hamlin was born in New Jersey in 1918. He began his career as a draftsman and boat builder. From 1939 to 1944 he worked for the Hinckley Company. He served in World War II in the Army Corps of Engineers, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. After the war he returned to boat design. In 1950 he went into partnership with E. Farnham Butler. In 1956 he established his own design firm. Together with David Thurston, he founded the Ocean Research Corporation in 1964. Ocean Research Corporation specialized in marine design, engineering and system analysis. In 1986 Hamlin dissolved the Corporation and once again went into private practice in naval architecture. In 1996 he partnered with Ron A. Smith to form Hamlin and Smith, Naval Architects.
